Paresthesia: Numbness, Pins and Needles, Burning and Pain sensations

By Clifford Fruithandler DC

Parasethesia are abnormal sensation felt in the body that may come on from a variety of causes. The sensations include pain, pins and needles, numbness, burning, cold, increased or decreased touch or pin point tenderness. They may be caused by direct nerve irritation, damage, degeneration or by vascular insufficiency. or metabolic changes. Below are some of the common conditions each with a different etiology or cause of sensory changes.

Multiple sclerosis
A chronic, typically progressive disease involving damage to the sheaths of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, whose symptoms may include numbness, impairment of speech and of muscular coordination, blurred vision, and severe fatigue.
We have a new treatment using the Asrya. It does'nt cure the condition but appears to put it into remission and give immediate improvement in balance and loss of heat intolerance. Hot weather for many brings on the symptoms of weakness and muscular in coordination.

Carpal tunnel syndrome
A painful condition of the hand and fingers caused by compression of a major nerve where it passes over the carpal (wrist) bones through a passage at the front of the wrist. . It may be caused by repetitive movements over a long period, or by fluid retention, and is characterised by sensations of tingling, numbness, or burning.
Chiropractic and Functional Medicine has many new approaches to treating this condition.
Diabetes
A disorder of the metabolism causing excessive thirst and the production of large amounts of urine. Blood sugars elevate and normal metabolic functions become altered. Chronically elevated blood sugar can create paresthesia starting in the distal extremities which can include numbness, loss of sensation, pins and needles, feeling of wet socks, and even loss of balance.
Stroke
A sudden disabling attack or loss of consciousness caused by an interruption in the flow of blood to the brain, esp. through thrombosis that blocks blood to the brain which can cause almost any type of sensation. In many cases there can be a loss of function or paralysis to parts of the body controlled by the section of the brain that is injured.
Peripheral neuropathy
The term used for damage to nerves of the peripheral nervous system. This may give a loss of sensation or increase sensation creating a variety of paresthesia including pins and needles , numbness, coldness, heat, burning, wet, pain, and any other feelings.
Metabolic Syndrome
As we age our metabolism changes. Alteration of electrolyes can give odd senstations and where in the body. In metabolic syndromes abnormal changes in a system such as hormonal or digestive systems change the environment surrouinding nerve cells with can alter sensation. These can be very complex yet when nomalization of the systems occur, paresthesias usually go away or reduce.

Functional Medicine today a new different approach to treating Paresthesia naturally that works well:
There are many medications that might help alleviate symptoms. Our goal is to restore function. With Functional Medicine there are a multitude of natural courses to take. In our office Dr Cliff utilizes the newest functional medicine techniques and protocols to naturally reduce or eliminate paresthesia. We combine cold laser therapy with Chiropractic mobilization of the spine and or extremity along with micro-current or interferential electrical stimulation and massage. The newest computerised protocol is the Asyra Bio-energetic Biofeedback with a laser and homeopathic remedies. Combined together these therapy save most of our patients from the need and side effects of drugs and surgery. There are also no significant side effects and the treatment feels good.
